The Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellowships are funded by the United States Department of Education in support of graduate and undergraduate students studying less commonly taught languages and cultures, in particular those considered to be of critical interest to the United States. They are intended to promote the training of students who plan to make their careers in college or university teaching, government service, or other employment where knowledge of foreign languages and cultures is a prerequisite for success. Eligible students from all institutions of higher education are encouraged to apply. Students who plan to study at the IU Summer Language Workshop are also eligible to apply.
The School of Global and International Studies is proud to have three centers (African Studies Program; Inner Asian and Uralic Studies Center; Russian and East European Institute) with funding for Summer 2018 awards in their respective world regions.
U.S. Citizen or Permanent Residency status required for eligibility.
The deadline to submit Summer 2018 applications is February 1, 2018 at 11:59 PM Eastern Standard Time.
PLEASE NOTE: The availability of FLAS awards in Academic Year 2018-19 is contingent upon confirmation of federal funding from the U.S. Department of Education for all FLAS Centers. Please check this website regularly for updates regarding the Academic Year 2018-19 FLAS competition, which will occur separately and after the Summer 2018 competition.
