“At SGIS, I have the feeling that I’m part of the school, part of the culture, part of Bloomington. Everyone has been so friendly. The classes not only give me knowledge for my career but help me build a strong social network,” says second-year Ph.D. student Tianrui Ma. As the only Chinese student in the Arabic doctoral program, Tianrui feared he might be isolated. Instead, he instantly embraced and was embraced by the SGIS community.

Tianrui Ma, Ph.D. candidate, Arabic
Tianrui began studying Arabic as an undergraduate in China. At SGIS, Tianrui is completing the coursework for his Ph.D .and studying Persian as well as the art of translation. He loves the challenge of translating from Arabic into English, because, he explains, “for me, it’s translating from one non-native language to another non-native language.” In fact, though, Arabic has become such an integral part of his character that when he composes his own poetry, it’s in Arabic.
