The Ph.D. program consists of 90 credit hours of coursework from the Department of Near Eastern Languages of Cultures, as well as approved related departments. Additionally, you will select a minor in an outside department or program to complement your research interests.
Developing language expertise is a core part of the Ph.D. program. Three non-English languages are required—a major NELC language (normally Arabic, Hebrew, Persian, or Turkish), a minor NELC language, and a European research language (such as French, German, or Spanish).
