IU is a world-renowned center for the study of languages and literatures across the globe. Language study takes place in an optimal environment, supported by prestigious and engaged faculty, advanced language-learning technologies, and a wide variety of enrichment opportunities.
The College of Arts and Sciences (of which SGIS is part) offers instruction in more than 70 languages. That’s the highest number of languages offered at any university in the United States. SGIS is also home to three Language Flagships and two National Language Resource Centers. In addition, the College of Arts and Sciences is home to an intensive Summer Language Workshop (SWSEEL) for Slavic, East European, Middle Eastern and Central Asian languages.
All are outstanding programs that foster excellence and innovation in language teaching, learning, and research.
Indiana University’s Chinese, Swahili, and Turkish Flagship Centers graduate students with professional level language proficiency through classroom learning, extracurricular activities, overseas study, and internship opportunities. The flexible design of our programs allow students to major in any of IU’s fields of study, including Business, Music, and Liberal Arts, while completing the requirements to receive certification from The Language Flagship, a leader in advanced language education.
Don’t just learn Chinese in a classroom— experience it in China! Integrate IU’s Chinese Flagship program into your college plans and study a language spoken by over 1 billion people. With China’s growing economic, political, and cultural influence, professional proficiency in Mandarin is a valuable asset for any student preparing for a career in our increasingly connected world.

Strategically located at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, Turkey provides access to several emerging markets. The first and only Turkish program of its kind, the Turkish Language Flagship program offers a unique opportunity to learn a language belonging to the Turkic language family, which is spoken by an estimated 150-170 million people, with Turkish speakers the largest at nearly 75 million.
National Language Resource Centers
These centers foster interest in and knowledge of the languages and cultures of their respective regions through language instruction, teacher training, and intensive language summer institutes.
The Summer Language Workshop (SWSEEL)
Offering intensive summer language training at the Bloomington campus of Indiana University since 1950, each year SWSEEL provides over 200 participants in Slavic, East European, Middle Eastern and Central Asian languages the opportunity to complete a full year of college language instruction in eight and nine-week summer sessions.
Utilizing the resources of Indiana University's own specialists as well as native speakers from other universities and abroad, the Summer Language Workshop has developed and maintained a national program of the highest quality.
